CPI is looking for a Research Scientist 1 or 2 (dependent on experience) to join the growing Digital & Automation team within the Biologics Technology Team, based at the National Biologics Manufacturing Centre (NBMC) in Darlington.
The role is focused on developing and implementing automation solutions for bioprocess applications in the pharmaceutical space, as well as the use of digital technologies for both bioprocess automation and more broadly across the Biologics team.

The Research Scientist 1 position would be ideal for recent degree graduates who wish to build upon theoretical knowledge and skills in bioprocess automation, and who have an interest in related digital technologies.
The Research Scientist 2 position would be ideal for candidates with a degree and some additional industrial and/or research experience who wish to build upon and apply existing practical experience in bioprocess automation and have familiarity with related digital technologies.
The team have worked on the Continuous 2 project (https://www.uk-cpi.com/uk-continuous-2), and a variety of digital projects in the biologics space.

Research Scientist 1:
To assist with the development and implementation of process automation workflows, for both batch and continuous processes.
To contribute to the development and implementation of advanced process control (APC) solutions for continuous processes.
To aid with data science and data engineering efforts within project work, as required.
To support the development and implementation of digital tools and technologies, especially as related to process automation.
To present and formally report experimental conclusions and supporting data for internal peer review and submission to clients, to agreed timescales and standards.
To support the wider technical team in digital, automation, and bioprocess work.
Research Scientist 2:
To design, develop, and implement process automation workflows, for both batch and continuous processes.
To design, develop, and implement advanced process control (APC) solutions for continuous processes.
To contribute to data architecture design and realisation as it relates to general bioprocessing and biologics work.
To contribute to the design, development, and implementation of digital tools and technologies, especially as related to process automation.
To provide support and training in automation and digital skills to more junior members and the wider technical team.
To support the wider technical team in digital, automation, and bioprocess work.
To support in Business Development and Bid Proposal activities, to contribute to proposal / project development and direct customer engagement.
Research Scientist 1:
You’ll bring:
A degree in a relevant scientific/engineering discipline OR a foundation degree (or equivalent) and relevant industrial experience.
A foundation of technical knowledge and some underpinning knowledge of at least one of:
Automation workflows.
Continuous process automation.
Advanced Process Control (APC).
Equipment integration.
Industrial automation software.
Evidence of technical problem solving gained in academic or industrial environments.
An awareness of digital technologies, specifically as they apply to process automation.
Experience of planning and delivering technical work.
Experience of data analysis & reporting findings (documentation and/or presentations).
Can demonstrate evidence of knowledge sharing and network building practice across teams or groups.
Has ability to apply learnt theoretical and practical scientific methods to contribute to business activities.
Ability to apply own judgement and initiative within standard engineering or scientific practices, as well as an understanding of when to seek advice from colleagues.
It would be great if you also had:
Experience or familiarity with continuous process automation.
Experience with Python programming.
Familiarity with statistical analysis/modelling and DoE/QbD.
Knowledge of data/network architecture and/or data science principles/skills.
Knowledge of digital twins and/or other computational modelling techniques.
Theoretical knowledge related to one of mammalian/microbial upstream or downstream processing.
Research Scientist 2:
You’ll bring:
A foundation degree (or equivalent) in a scientific/engineering discipline and significant relevant industrial/academic experience OR a degree in a science/engineering discipline plus some relevant industrial/academic experience.
Technical expertise through theory, a good underpinning technical knowledge base, and evidence of technical problem solving in at least one of:
Automation workflows.
Continuous process automation.
Advanced Process Control (APC).
Equipment integration.
Industrial automation software.
Professional mastery of principles and practices in process automation and/or advanced process control, gained in academic or industrial environments.
An awareness of digital technologies, specifically as they apply to process automation.
Experience with Python programming.
Experience of planning and delivering technical work.
Experience of data analysis & reporting findings (documentation and/or presentations).
Evidence of knowledge sharing and network building practice across teams or groups.
Ability to apply theoretical and practical scientific/engineering methods to contribute to business activities.
Examples of actively utilising cross-team collaboration to achieve desired results.
Confidence to use own judgement and initiative within standard engineering / scientific practices, as well as an understanding of when to seek advice from colleagues.

Siemens PCS7.
PharmaMV.
WinCC.
Closely related equivalent of one or more of the above.
Experience or familiarity with digital twins and/or other computational modelling techniques.
