The role

The Market Strategy function is CPI’s trusted external market intelligence hub which drives strategic trusted decision-making through data-driven insights.  The team proactively monitors, investigates and communicates macro and market trends, equipping CPI with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions.  By serving as the ‘eyes and ears’ of CPI, the function supports the organisation with the information and insights to make the right choices enabling it to achieve its visions, goals, revenue, and impact targets. 

CPI has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Market Strategy Manager to join its established Market Strategy Team. Reporting to the Director of Market Strategy, the role-holder will be  developing deep market understanding, segmentation, positioning and targeting to inform strategy across CPI’s Sustainable Chemicals and Materials markets. 

The role-holder will lead strategy development for markets spanning sustainable chemicals, advanced and functional materials, circular economy solutions, and low carbon manufacturing, undertaking options analysis and providing evidence-based recommendations to support client engagement, strategic prioritisation and income generation activities. 

The focus of the role will be on sustainable materials and chemical markets, including areas such as novel materials, biobased and low carbon chemicals, sustainable processing technologies and future manufacturing models. The role-holder will be expected to develop coherent market strategies that align with CPI’s capabilities and strategic ambitions, while remaining responsive to emerging opportunities across the wider portfolio as required. 

The role is fully focused on Market Strategy activities, working closely and supporting technical, commercial and leadership teams to shape propositions, guide investment decisions and support the growth of CPI’s sustainable chemicals and materials activities. It will require strong interpersonal skills.

Key tasks in the role will include the below - for full details, please download the attached job description.

  • To own the development of strategy and route to market for allocated market(s). Which includes development of Market Strategies and Market Acquisition Strategies.  

  • To own allocated markets within CPI’s Market Strategy team, providing accessible centre of market knowledge and recommended insights.  

  • To drive the implementation of route to market strategy and be accountable for significant income and impact generation from chosen market(s). 

  • To be accountable for effective market analysis, including understanding of market drivers, dynamics and potential customers to identify and develop income generating opportunities. 

  • To undertake analysis for emerging and strategic large strategic programmes (and strategic opportunities) to assess potential to progress into revenue generating opportunities, as directed by the Director of Market Strategy. 

  • To be accountable and responsible for content generation, value proposition development, campaign planning activities for allocated markets. 

  • To make recommendations jointly with the technology and innovation teams on new and significant capability builds within CPI, leading to creation of future market offerings. 

  • To deliver market analysis to internal and external clients as part of internal working groups or commercial or CRD projects.  

  • To manage relationships with senior external stakeholders related to chosen markets including funders (IUK etc), industry bodies, LSEs etc. 

  • Within the allocated market(s), identify areas of thought leadership related to innovation gaps and be ‘technical’ lead on programmes to bring in funding for, and develop and share that thought leadership.  

  • To produce and share further relevant thought leadership from market analysis. 

  • To take part in CRD and/or commercial projects to provide expertise externally in Strategic Marketing/Market Strategy. 

The person

The person

Must be educated to HNC, Foundation Degree or Degree level (or equivalent) in a Scientific/Engineering or Business Related (such as Marketing, Economics) discipline plus relevant / significant / relevant industrial experience and; 

  • Be able to credibly engage with internal and external stakeholders in the UK and overseas. These engagements need to be up to C level.

  • Be able to demonstrate analytical skills in a diverse markets/sectors across public and private sectors.

It would be great if you also had: 

  • Prior experience of assimilating complex data and synthesising into clear, unambiguous business proposals for decision making.

  • Relevant experience of operating within an innovation, research and development environment.

  • Experience of working with and/or supporting a Strategic Opportunities team or Strategic Marketing/Market Strategy team.

  • Market knowledge of the materials and chemicals market and also Engineering Biology and Biomanufacturing.
